Our History

Identifying the Need

The Day Spring Community began as the shared dream of three groups of people: parents, adults with intellectual disabilities, professionals and concerned citizens involved in the lives of the first two groups. Parents expressed concern about the future for their adult child who would undoubtedly outlive them. At the same time, the adult child articulated a desire to offer their gifts to the world, to have a life of their own and to share life with friends in community. From this dream, Day Spring was born.

Day Spring was founded to address the basic and human needs of adults with intellectual disabilities.

Realizing the Dream

In 1994, with the generous donation of 13 acres of land in a beautiful residential setting on Illinois Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, and the support of countless people who shared the vision, Day Spring became a reality. Two homes opened to receive 14 people who would come to call Day Spring “home.”

Today, Day Spring provides group and apartment housing and support services in six residential locations to 44 adults with intellectual disabilities who want the opportunity to live in community. We live the dream!
