Celebrating DSP Appreciation Week: The Heart of Day Spring

At Day Spring, our mission is to cultivate hope, belonging, and community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. But our mission isn’t just words on paper, it’s lived out every single day through the dedication of our Direct Support Professionals (DSPs).

DSPs are the backbone of Day Spring. They are caregivers, advocates, teachers, and friends. They support our residents in the practical aspects of daily life, but also in pursuing dreams, building independence, and feeling truly at home. Quite simply, our organization could not function without them.

What is a DSP?

Direct Support Professionals are highly skilled and compassionate individuals who assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in living full and independent lives. Their responsibilities are diverse and essential:

  • Helping with daily living tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and personal care.

  • Providing transportation so residents can access jobs, healthcare, and the Louisville community.

  • Encouraging friendships, hobbies, and meaningful activities.

  • Advocating for residents’ rights, needs, and goals.

  • Ensuring safe, supportive home environments.

At Day Spring, DSPs work 24/7, 365 days a year, ensuring residents are never without care, comfort, and connection. Their impact is felt not only by the people they serve but also by families across Kentucky who know their loved ones are cared for.

The Backbone of Our Nonprofit Mission

Day Spring currently employs 25 DSPs who keep our operations running smoothly. Many have been with us for over a decade, forming bonds with residents that last a lifetime.

  • Lisa, Donna, Russ, and Peter have each given more than 14 years to building deep and lasting relationships with residents.

  • Tracy brings our mission home in a unique way—serving both as a DSP and Family Home Provider. For years, she welcomed individuals from the Family Home Provider program to become part of her family and even welcomed residents from our residential program who didn’t have family of their own, into her holiday and family celebrations.

  • Russ once walked miles through a snowstorm to get to work, refusing to let residents go without care.

  • Wendy and Tomeka are leaders among their peers, raising the bar and strengthening team culture.

  • Sharon drives more than two hours each way for her shifts because she cares so deeply for those she serves.

These are just a few stories that represent the kind of dedication DSPs show every single day!

Voices of Gratitude

This week, our residents, families, board members, and staff shared words of appreciation that capture just how important DSPs are:

  • “You are the backbone of this organization. It all comes together because of your hard work each day. Thank you.” – Dan Heekin, Board Member

  • “Connie Cole: I love the way you make delicious meals, especially the kitchen and dirty chores.” – Camille, Day Spring Resident

  • "Your roles represent the core of the services we provide and the mission of Day Spring, and without you there would not be a Day Spring. Thank you for giving your time, energy, compassion, and may other talents to our community.” – Phillip Stuecker, Board Member

  • “Our DSPs demonstrate an unparalleled level of commitment which makes exceptional care for our residents. You are the driving force behind hope for families of those we serve. Thank you for all you do!” – Lauren Hays, CEO

  • “You all are the glue to Day Spring! Please know that we greatly appreciate you all!!” – Brittany, Day Spring Staff

  • “May you be proud of the work you do, the person you are, and the difference you make.” – Jennifer, Day Spring Staff

  • “Rachel goes above and beyond to get the residents out in the community. Her smile is infectious!” – Jacqueline and Jo Ann Kalb, Resident and Family

  • "The difference you make is bigger than you know." Natalie, Day Spring Staff

These heartfelt words remind us that the impact of a DSP goes far beyond daily tasks, it’s about creating joy, security, and belonging.
